bladder infection femaleAbout 40% of women suffer from bladder infection or urinary tract infection (UTI) at some time in their life while many women suffer through several infections throughout their lifetime. Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria and are 10 times more common among women than men. This is most likely due to women have a shorter urinary tract than men.

What is bladder infection?

Bladder infection or urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection that occurs when bacteria invade the urinary tract system. The bacteria tend to multiply throughout the urinary track system. Bladder infections often cause severe symptoms such as pain and/or burning upon urination.
Up to 40% of bladder infections tend to recur within 6 months after the initial episode. When urinary tract infections do recur, it is often because the treatments used to suppress bacteria seem to work at first, but do not produce a lasting cure. Bladder infection can also recur when women are infected again but by different bacteria.

What causes bladder infection?

Most urine infections are caused by bacteria that come from your own bowel. They cause no harm in your bowel, but can cause infection if they get into other parts of your body. Some bacteria lie around your anus (back passage) after you pass a stool (faeces). These bacteria sometimes travel to your urethra and into your bladder. Some bacteria thrive in urine and multiply quickly to cause infection.
